The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 33,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty or interest area. The Prevention/Early Detection SIG was established in 1989.
Prevention/Early Detection SIG Mission Statement
The mission of the Prevention/Early Detection SIG is to promote excellence in oncology nursing through an exchange of information related to Cancer Prevention and Early Detection and by supporting the ONS mission statement.
Goals
- To disseminate scientific information on Prevention/Early Detection to be utilized in various practice settings.
- To develop and implement strategies to assist oncology nurses to respond to the diversities of people with cancer or those at risk for developing cancer.
- To provide an opportunity to network with nurses interested in cancer prevention and early detection.
- To educate oncology nurses of the current guidelines for cancer prevention and early detection.
- To increase ONS membership/enhance image.
Activities
The Prevention/Early Detection SIG has chosen to fulfill their goals by preparing timely topic submission for ONS educational events, sharing information and networking through their newsletter, communiques and directory. Joint newsletters will be produced in cooperation with common interest SIGs. Site specific newsletters will provide greater depth of topic coverage and will include guidelines and rationale for screenings. Risk appraisal tools and prevention educational materials will be inventoried and evaluated. A membership questionnaire is planned for development of detailed practice profiles.
Benefits/Communication
The SIG meets once per year during the ONS Annual Congress. Prevention/Early Detection SIG leaders regularly communicate with members through written communiques and through a newsletter. The newsletter features timely articles of interest to oncology nurses concerned about prevention, early detection, and related issues. The newsletter also includes reports on SIG projects and activities, announcements, and messages from SIG leaders. Special interest networking is a major benefit of the SIG.
Membership Requirements
All SIG members must be members in good standing of the national Oncology Nursing Society. ONS members receive one free SIG membership. Additional SIG memberships are $15 each.
